ALTON Wants Social Media Regulated

I Guess they never get tired of trying. Association Of Telecommunications Operators Of Nigeria (ALTON) jist called for licensing and regulation of over-the-top services in the country. OTP Services which are YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter.

I guess the real reason behind the regulation is make maximum revenue because telcos are not making profit as they used to because social networks like WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook has taken over the old way of communicating like the Sms and phone calls.

They made similar move back in 2017 but NCC rejected their plea but they are still not giving up and are back with the same thing.

Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, the chairman of ALTON said,
We are beginning to see the need for regulators to look at regulating technology instead of services. For example, the likes of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Blackberry Messenger and many others are called over-the-top services that are not part of the core services for which operators are licensed. These over-the-top services have social, economic and security implications. If they are not licensed, it means they are not regulated, and in that case, there is no limit to the scope of what they can do. There is also no control over services and content they may provide,

Well the thing is Nigerians can't be expected to have these services regulated of even pay more because it hurts the telco conpanies.
